Sprint Day in Shanghai

March 14, 2026 | 8:00 PM

Sprint day in Shanghai delivered the first competitive race of the Chinese Grand Prix weekend.

After sprint qualifying set the order, drivers lined up for a 19-lap race where strategy takes a back seat and immediate pace becomes the priority. With fewer laps and limited tyre management concerns, the sprint often encourages aggressive racing from the very start.

From the opening laps, the fight at the front quickly narrowed to a small group of cars. Mercedes and Ferrari appeared particularly strong as the field settled into rhythm around the long, technical layout of the Shanghai International Circuit.

Over the course of the sprint, George Russell maintained control of the race, managing both pace and tyre life to secure the win. The Mercedes driver crossed the line in 33:38.998, claiming the full eight sprint points.

Charles Leclerc finished second, just 0.674 seconds behind Russell, while Lewis Hamilton completed the podium in third, 2.554 seconds off the lead — giving Ferrari two cars inside the top three.

Behind them, Lando Norris finished fourth for McLaren, followed by Kimi Antonelli in fifth, delivering another strong performance for Mercedes.

Sprint races offer only a small portion of championship points, but they often reveal valuable information about race pace and tyre behaviour. In Shanghai, the result suggested that both Mercedes and Ferrari could be serious contenders as the weekend continues.
