Shanghai Qualifying
March 15, 2026 | 6:00 PM
Qualifying in Shanghai produced one of the most interesting results of the weekend so far.
Across Q1 and Q2, the field remained tightly packed as drivers searched for the right balance through the circuit’s sweeping opening corners and the long back straight. As the track evolved, lap times steadily improved, setting up a competitive final session.
When Q3 began, the fight for pole position quickly centred on Mercedes and Ferrari. Both teams had shown strong pace throughout the weekend, and the final laps confirmed it.
In the end, it was Kimi Antonelli who delivered the fastest lap of the session, securing pole position for Mercedes with a 1:32.064. The performance placed the young driver at the front of the grid for Sunday’s race.
George Russell completed a Mercedes front row, qualifying second with a 1:32.286, just over two tenths behind his teammate.
Ferrari followed closely behind. Lewis Hamilton qualified third with a 1:32.415, while Charles Leclerc took fourth after setting a 1:32.428, placing both Ferrari cars directly behind the Mercedes pair.
Rounding out the top five was Oscar Piastri, who put his McLaren in fifth position with a 1:32.550.
Qualifying often reveals the pure pace of each car more clearly than any other session. With minimal fuel and maximum tyre performance, every driver has only a few opportunities to produce the perfect lap.
In Shanghai, those laps delivered a fascinating result: a Mercedes front row led by Antonelli, with Ferrari and McLaren close enough behind to promise a competitive race.
