Russell Takes Pole in Dramatic Qualifying
March 8, 2026 | 8:00 PM
The first qualifying session of the Formula 1 season delivered immediate drama and several unexpected results.
George Russell secured pole position with a strong final lap, putting Mercedes at the front of the grid for the opening race. Lining up beside him will be rookie Kimi Antonelli, who continued an impressive debut weekend by qualifying second.
One of the standout performances came from Isack Hadjar, who placed third, ahead of Charles Leclerc in fourth. Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris completed the top six, keeping McLaren firmly in contention near the front.
Ferrari showed clear improvement compared to last season. Lewis Hamilton qualified seventh after delivering a strong Q2 lap, helped by a switch to soft tyres that significantly improved his pace.
Further down the top ten, Liam Lawson placed eighth, while rookie Arvid Lindblad impressed again with ninth — another strong showing that highlights how quickly he is adapting to Formula 1. Gabriel Bortoleto completed the top ten.
Behind them were Nico Hülkenberg in eleventh, Oliver Bearman twelfth, Esteban Ocon thirteenth, Pierre Gasly fourteenth, and Alex Albon fifteenth.
The lower half of the grid saw Franco Colapinto sixteenth, followed by Fernando Alonso seventeenth, Sergio Pérez eighteenth, and Valtteri Bottas nineteenth.
The biggest shock came early in the session. Max Verstappen crashed in Q1 with 7:29 remaining, ending his qualifying prematurely. David Croft later explained that “the wing shut and snapped sideways,” sending the car off track. Remarkably, it marked the first time in Verstappen’s Formula 1 career that he has crashed during Q1.
The final two positions went to Carlos Sainz in twenty-first and Lance Stroll in twenty-second.
With rookies shining, Ferrari looking stronger, and Verstappen starting far down the grid, the season’s first race is already shaping up to be unpredictable.
