Melbourne Practice Day

March 7, 2026 | 8:00 PM

The first full day of running for the new Formula 1 season has offered the earliest glimpse into how the grid might unfold over the coming months.

Free Practice 1 opened with Ferrari immediately looking comfortable. Charles Leclerc set the fastest time of the session with a 1:20.267, placing the Scuderia at the top of the timesheets in the very first outing of the year. His teammate Lewis Hamilton followed in second with a 1:20.736, giving Ferrari an early one-two and suggesting the team has begun the season with solid pace.

Max Verstappen placed third, only a few tenths behind, while several younger drivers also made strong early impressions further down the order as teams worked through their first real programmes of the season.

But as often happens on a Formula 1 Friday, the picture evolved once the second session began.

Free Practice 2 saw the pace increase as teams switched focus towards qualifying-style runs. Oscar Piastri delivered the fastest lap of the day with a 1:19.729, placing McLaren at the top of the timesheets in front of a home crowd in Melbourne.

Behind him, Kimi Antonelli finished second with a 1:19.943, followed closely by George Russell in third with a 1:20.049, indicating that Mercedes may be closer to the front than many expected coming into the opening race weekend.

Ferrari remained firmly in the mix, with Hamilton fourth and Leclerc fifth, while Verstappen ended the session sixth as teams continued experimenting with different setups and tyre programmes.

Saturday’s Free Practice 3 delivered the final preparation before qualifying, with George Russell setting the pace for Mercedes.

Russell topped the session with a 1:19.053, the fastest lap of the weekend so far. Lewis Hamilton followed in second with a 1:19.669, while Charles Leclerc placed third with a 1:19.827, keeping Ferrari close to the front.

Oscar Piastri finished fourth with a 1:20.087, and Isack Hadjar continued his strong weekend in fifth with a 1:20.137.

The session was briefly interrupted when Kimi Antonelli crashed, bringing out a red flag and cutting running short for several teams during the closing minutes.

With final setup work complete, attention now shifts to qualifying as the first grid of the new season is about to be decided.

As always, Practice results should be read cautiously. Fuel loads vary, long-run simulations are prioritised by some teams, and outright pace is not always the main objective.

Still, the first day and a half in Melbourne has already hinted at a competitive front group. Ferrari look sharp over a single lap, McLaren appear comfortable as the track evolves, and Mercedes have quietly inserted themselves into the conversation.

For now, the season’s first clues are beginning to appear — but the real picture will only emerge once qualifying begins.
